Rough Cut Feedback

We thought that the feed back that we received was constructive as it helped us spot the errors in our work. Our class mates commented on the editing, camera work, sound, mise en scene and narrative. So far the only editing that we have completed is cutting, for example making the shots the right length and speed, these clips have then been put in order. Therefor it was hard for the class to leave feedback on editing as there was little evidence of editing techniques. However the class did notice our wide variety of shots and locations added intrigue to the footage.
Within our camera work, the class commented on the point of view shots being effective in showing characters perspective. the class put down shaky shots as being realistic in the part of footage where the character is stumbling down the isle through the point of view shot.
The class commented that the silence in our footage due to the lack of music, created tension. This was an interesting comment because we originally decided to use music in our sequence.

Mise en scene is an important way of explaining the plot and genre of our sequence, we used various strategys to achieve this. Our class commented on these, for example the dark church location and the sinister contrast of a vicar with a bloody knife.

Comments on narrative included "church in dark is spooky, it also builds up suspense as you cannot not focus on characters faces. This also makes the audience intrigued. The class said that it was unclear of the storyline, however after editing it would be more clear.

Teacher Feedback

I think your idea has a lot of potential. I particularly like the juxtaposition of the church setting and the priest with the themes of murder. This demonstrates a clear understanding of the generic conventions of a thriller.
My only concern is your intention to depict someone slitting their wrists, you could consider prosthetics as other class members suggested but I think the most sensible and safest way around this is to film it in such a way that suggests the person has just slit their wrists rather than trying to film it.
Your blog would benefit from a location report of the church you intend to film at, detail why you chose it, some images of where you intend to film, any potential problems that the location presents etc.

Comprehensive analysis of a Thriller film.

Catch me if you can (Steven Spielberg 2002)

The opening title sequence of this film is laid out through the use of animation. Cartoon characters are used to represent the general structure of events in the film. For example, in the film the character Frank, played by Leonardo DiCaprio is a infamous con-artist being persuade by the FBI. The prolonging theme in the film of Frank evading the FBI is symbolized through a variety of animation techniques, these include an animated Frank climbing a staircase, however as he reaches the top, the stairs start to disappear, leaving the FBI agent left behind at the bottom. This symbolizes that Frank is untraceable.
The typography of the credits are shown through a series of lines that combine together to form words. After the name is formed the lines separate, this also represents the mystery and illusion the film involves.
The actual animation used to show the film title, is the same as the other text, however it is larger and the "me" in the title is shown as a cloud. This cloud is then wisped away, just like Frank by an oncoming aeroplane.
The music used is subtle jazz, it uses a flute to create a mysterious and mischievous setting.

The Reckoning

The first 20 seconds shows one character getting his clothes ready , getting his weapon ready for action. this involves close ups of the characters face, and long shots of him climbing up walls and through hatches. The music starts off quite fast paced with a dramatic feel, and through out builds up, to build tension. There is a good use of special effects, the ghost effect is used where shots merge into one another, this helps to add to confusion, and builds a web of intrigue.
